Why the distinction matters
"Bee removal" and "extermination" get used interchangeably by a lot of homeowners, but they describe two different processes with different goals, different costs, and in some cases different legal considerations. The short version: honeybees are typically removed and relocated alive whenever it's feasible, while wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets are typically exterminated. The reason isn't sentimentality — it comes down to what each insect actually is and what happens to the colony if it's just killed in place.
Why honeybees are removed, not killed
Honeybee populations have declined significantly over recent decades due to a combination of pesticide exposure, habitat loss, and colony collapse disorder, and they're the primary managed pollinator for a large share of agricultural crops in the country. That combination of ecological importance and population pressure is why many pest control companies — and in some areas, local ordinances — treat honeybee colonies differently from other stinging insects.
There's also a practical reason beyond conservation: a honeybee colony that's exterminated in place, inside a wall void or attic space for example, leaves behind wax comb and stored honey. If that comb isn't physically removed, it can melt, attract other pests, and cause staining or odor issues inside the structure, even after the bees themselves are dead. Live removal, which extracts the colony including the comb, avoids that secondary problem entirely.
How a honeybee removal actually works
A live removal typically starts with locating the colony, which for a wall or attic colony often means identifying entry points and sometimes using specialized equipment to find the extent of the comb inside a wall cavity without fully opening it up. Depending on the location, this may involve removing a section of drywall or siding to access the comb directly. The comb, brood, and as much of the colony as possible — ideally including the queen — is then removed and relocated, often to a local beekeeper. Afterward, the void needs to be cleaned out and the entry point sealed, both to prevent a new swarm from moving into the same spot and to remove any lingering wax or honey residue.
This is a more involved process than spraying a nest, which is part of why honeybee removal costs more on average than wasp nest removal — the job includes structural access and cleanup, not just insect elimination.
Wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets: why these get exterminated
Paper wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets don't produce or store honey, and their nests don't leave the same cleanup problem behind that an abandoned honeybee hive does. These species are also considerably more aggressive when defending a nest, and unlike honeybees — which can only sting once — wasps and yellow jackets can sting multiple times, which raises the practical safety stakes of leaving an active nest in place near a home. For these species, extermination followed by physical nest removal (to prevent scavenging insects and to fully resolve the problem) is the standard approach.
Different species also nest differently, which affects the approach: paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests usually under eaves or in sheltered spots; yellow jackets often nest in the ground or in wall voids, which makes them harder to spot until someone's already been stung; hornets build large enclosed paper nests, often high in trees. Correctly identifying which of these you're dealing with matters for treatment, since ground-nesting yellow jackets require a different approach than an exposed paper wasp nest.
Carpenter bees: a third category
Carpenter bees look similar to bumblebees but behave very differently — instead of a large social colony, they bore individual round holes into untreated wood (deck railings, eaves, fascia boards) to nest. They're not aggressive and rarely sting, but repeated boring year after year can cause real structural and cosmetic wood damage over time. Treatment usually focuses on treating and sealing the individual holes and, where practical, painting or treating exposed wood, since carpenter bees strongly prefer untreated or weathered wood over painted or sealed surfaces.
What this means for cost
Because the process differs so much by species, "how much does bee or wasp removal cost" doesn't have one answer. A straightforward paper wasp nest on an eave is a relatively quick job. A yellow jacket nest in a wall void or in the ground takes more care to treat safely. A honeybee colony established inside a wall cavity, requiring structural access, comb removal, and cleanup, is the most involved and typically the most expensive of the three.
