Bite pattern
Bed bug bites often appear in a line or cluster on exposed skin, unlike the more random pattern typical of mosquito bites. That said, bite pattern alone isn't a reliable diagnosis — some people don't react to bites at all.
Rust-colored stains on sheets
Small rust or dark spots on mattress seams and sheets are often crushed bed bugs or their waste, and are one of the more reliable early physical signs.
A sweet, musty odor
Heavier infestations sometimes produce a faint, sweet, musty smell, though this is usually only noticeable once the population has grown significantly.
Visible bugs or shed skins
Check mattress seams, headboard joints, and furniture crevices near the bed for live bugs (reddish-brown, roughly apple-seed sized) or their translucent shed skins.
