German cockroaches favor warm, humid spaces near food and water — kitchens, behind appliances, under sinks — and Mansfield's a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters, typical of the Piedmont, cooler in the mountains to the north keeps them active most of the year. American cockroaches, larger and reddish-brown, prefer basements, drains, and utility rooms. Crawl-space and slab construction is common here, built for the region's humid climate rather than deep winter cold.
