German cockroaches favor warm, humid spaces near food and water — kitchens, behind appliances, under sinks — and McNeal's a borderlands desert climate that runs a few degrees cooler than the low desert to the north, but still sees a real monsoon season keeps them active most of the year. American cockroaches, larger and reddish-brown, prefer basements, drains, and utility rooms. A mix of older adobe and block-construction homes near town centers with newer stucco-and-block subdivisions on the outskirts, plus manufactured housing common in rural stretches.
