German cockroaches favor warm, humid spaces near food and water — kitchens, behind appliances, under sinks — and North's a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters, moderated by proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic keeps them active most of the year. American cockroaches, larger and reddish-brown, prefer basements, drains, and utility rooms. Crawl-space and slab construction is common near the coast, given the high water table typical of Tidewater Virginia.
